a new chapter at the edge of the Indian Ocean

There are places in this world that exist quietly, doing extraordinary things without needing to announce themselves.

Swell Lodge is one of them.

Two chalets set inside Christmas Island National Park, surrounded by jungle, ocean, and one of the most remarkable concentrations of wildlife on earth. It’s not the kind of place that tries very hard. It simply exists — and if you spend even a short time here, it tends to leave a lasting impression.

Which brings us to this first journal entry.

Swell Lodge has new owners.

Rach Kucera and Owen Walsh have recently taken over the stewardship of the lodge, bringing with them a renewed commitment to everything that makes this place special. Not a reinvention. Not a rebrand. A continuation - approached with care, attention, and a deep respect for what Swell Lodge already is.

“Swell Lodge doesn’t need to be reimagined. It simply deserves to continue being cared for with the attention a place like this inspires. Our role is to look after it well while making a few thoughtful updates - a refreshed interior style and the return of the lodge’s all-inclusive experience.”

Both are now on the island, which feels like the only real way to understand this place. Christmas Island has a habit of making things that once felt abstract suddenly become very real. You arrive and the jungle closes in, the ocean opens out, and you realise that whatever you imagined the island might be, it will quickly become something else entirely.

Over the past weeks they’ve been settling into the rhythms of life here - learning the quirks of the chalets, noticing the particular quality of light in the late afternoon when it catches the canopy and turns everything gold, and getting to know the neighbours. On Christmas Island that includes both the human kind and the many creatures with shells, claws, and wings.

The red crabs continue doing what red crabs do. Frigatebirds circle overhead. The ocean is loud and close and wonderfully indifferent.

What Swell Lodge has always offered - and it will continue to offer - is something that sounds simple, even though delivering it well rarely is.

Guests arrive and immediately feel they’ve made an excellent decision. They sleep properly, eat well, and see things they’ve never seen before. They leave with that particular kind of experience that takes a long time to come down from.

This journal will be where we record all of it - the seasons, the wildlife moments, and the small daily discoveries that come with living and working somewhere genuinely unusual.

Sometimes we’ll write about the logistics of running a remote eco-lodge in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Sometimes we’ll write about a sunset that stopped us mid-sentence.

Both feel worth recording.

Welcome to the next chapter of Swell Lodge.
